Convert a PNG to lossless WebP

webp-encode is a lossless PNG-to-WebP encoding node powered by cwebp.

overview

What webp-encode does

Encode one 8-bit RGB or RGBA PNG with native cwebp. The result is a lossless WebP image, preserving pixels rather than the PNG encoding. Source bytes remain unchanged. Resizing and metadata copying are outside this operation.

8-bit RGB/RGBA PNG to native lossless WebP only; 16 MiB, 4096x4096, 60 seconds, 512 MiB address space; exact pixel roundtrip checks

Input or native processing failures fail the operation. The operation keeps the supplied source unchanged.

This operation uses 1.2.4-deb12u1. Upstream license: BSD-3-Clause. The source link identifies the program used by this node.

use cases

Where webp-encode fits

Create lossless web images

Convert supplied PNG pixels to a VP8L WebP artifact.

Preserve transparent pixels

Encode RGBA PNG input without choosing a lossy quality setting.

Keep conversion reproducible

Keep the supplied PNG and review the returned WebP separately.

guidance

Choosing webp-encode

Choose this node for a fixed lossless PNG-to-WebP conversion. ImageMagick offers broader image processing; JPEG optimization is a separate operation.

imagemagick

Provides general image conversion; this node exposes only lossless PNG-to-WebP encoding.

Run webp-encode yourself

The synthetic run checks lossless webp. The saved verifier records the result; this text page does not reproduce the native artifact. The command shown is the container entrypoint with example paths, not a host-installed CLI command.
