Extract embedded raster images from a PDF

pdf-images is a PDF image extraction node powered by Poppler pdfimages.

Agent

overview

What pdf-images does

Extract embedded raster images from selected PDF pages as numbered PNG files at their original pixel dimensions.

This operation extracts image objects rather than rendering pages. It does not reproduce text, vector artwork or page composition. PNG decoding does not preserve the original compressed JPEG bytes. Transparency masks remain separate.

Input is at most 100 MiB; first-page defaults to 1 and page-count to 10, with at most 50 selected pages. Limits are 100 images, 25 million pixels per image and 100 million pixels total. Raster-free pages, invalid PDFs or exceeded limits fail without partial images.

This packaged operation uses 22.12.0-2+deb12u3. Upstream license: GPL-2.0-only OR GPL-3.0-only. The linked source identifies the actual program; this page documents the adapter's exposed contract.

use cases

Where pdf-images fits

Recover embedded rasters

Extract raster image objects rather than rendering whole pages.

Limit extraction by page

Choose the first page and a bounded page count.

Preserve original pixel dimensions

Keep native embedded pixel dimensions in PNG output.

guidance

Choosing pdf-images

Use pdf-to-png for complete rendered page layouts. Use this operation when the original embedded raster dimensions matter, including small images displayed at larger sizes.

The public image repository includes download instructions for this version and a separate source/notices bundle. Its overview provides an immutable ORAS command, the expected bundle checksum and pinned upstream source directions. The bundle contains the original build recipe, runtime sources and retained component license notices. Image, source and license notice downloads.

Run pdf-images yourself

The saved synthetic check verified two 2×2 PNG images and exact decoded red, green, blue and white pixels. Binary PNG artifacts are not embedded as a text sample. The command shows the container entrypoint with example paths.
