Map architecture decisions and their relationships

adr-graph is an offline graph generator for numbered Markdown architecture decision records.

overview

What adr-graph does

Generate a DOT relationship graph from numbered Markdown architecture decision records.

Generate DOT text with decision titles, chronological edges and Status relationships. The native adr generate graph operation runs on a temporary copy; it does not render an image or initialize a repository.

Supply 1 to 500 top-level numbered Markdown files totaling at most 10 MiB. Titles must start with # and use plain text. Quotes, backslashes, angle brackets and control characters in titles or relationship labels are rejected. Malformed input fails without an artifact; the timeout is 60 seconds.

Packaged version: 3.0.0. Upstream license: MIT.

use cases

Where adr-graph fits

Trace superseded decisions

Follow explicit Supersedes links between numbered records.

Inspect decision chronology

Receive dotted chronological edges alongside Status relationships.

Prepare a graph for rendering

guidance

Choosing adr-graph

Use adr-graph to inspect recorded decision relationships. A Graphviz renderer is a separate step. Nested Markdown files are ignored, and this graph does not establish whether the recorded decisions remain correct.

The public image repository gives immutable image and ORAS download commands, the expected source/notices bundle checksum and pinned upstream source directions. The accompanying OCI bundle retains the original build recipe, runtime sources and full installed notices. The Git recipe keeps primary notices and an exact layer/hash index; it does not duplicate the full installed notice tree or mirror every upstream source archive. Image, source and license notice downloads.

Run adr-graph yourself

The saved fixture verifier confirmed both decision titles and the DOT edge _2 -> _1 with the Supersedes label. This is an assertion summary, not a retained complete DOT artifact. The command shows the container entrypoint with example paths.
