# Skills

## What is a Skill

A **Skill** is a set of reusable instructions for a type of task. You write the instructions once. The [Agent](/docs/key-concepts/agent/the-agent) can follow them whenever that kind of task comes up. A skill might standardize how the Agent reviews findings, structures a report, or follows a recurring team process.

Some skills come with Trickest, and you can create or import your own. Custom skills can be edited. Built-in skills remain unchanged unless you fork them into an editable copy. [Creating and Importing a Skill](/docs/using-the-app/agent/creating-a-skill) explains how to add or customize one.

## How the Agent uses a skill

You do not select a Skill in the composer. The Agent can load a listed Skill when the current task matches its purpose. Use a Skill when a kind of task should follow the same reusable instructions each time, such as a consistent review or reporting process.

Use [Memory](/docs/key-concepts/agent/memory) for preferences and facts that should carry across conversations. If an instruction matters only for the current request, put it in the prompt instead of turning it into a Skill.
